Dot Matrix Panels

The most popular use of the "72" series indicators is in dot matrix panels.  These panels use a 5 by 7 arrangement of dots to allow the display of full alphanumeric characters and graphics.  The panels range in size from 18" active height to 9" active height.  All use the "72" series dots in a multiplexed arrangement and require only 19 active wires to drive the array.

The drive circuitry for these panels is simple and inexpensive, requiring 14 source lines (for the entire sign) and 5 strobe lines per panel, or 14 source lines per line and 5 strobe lines per column in a multi line arrangement.  Isolation diodes are provided on each coil to prevent "sneak" paths.  It takes less than 10 milliseconds to pulse a single panel, which makes large message/graphic displays utilizing hundreds of panels easy to construct.  And the total power consumption of a 100 panel display (9 feet tall by 20 feet wide), changing the message every five seconds, averages less than four watts!

Dot matrix panels are available in the following sizes:

Active area size 18" tall by 12.75" wide, using 2-1/4" (57mm) dots:  Model 1872RFR-35BC

Active area size 16" tall by 11.37" wide, using 2" (51mm) dots:  Model 1672RFR-35BC

Active area size 12" tall by 8.5" wide, using 1-1/2" (38mm) dots:  Model 1272RFR-35BC

Active area size 9" tall by 6.37" wide, using 1-1/8" (29mm) dots:  Model 972RFR-35BC

Click here for a PDF data sheet on line-based matrix panels.  These are for use in line-based (stacking side by side) arrangements.  The panels are also available in "graphics" versions which eliminate the blank areas at the top and bottom and can be stacked vertically and horizontally to form continuous arrays.  Click here (inches) or here (metric) for a dimension sheet of a typical graphics panel (the 18" model).

These panels are also available in 23 dot and 20 dot versions (the installed dots are in the shape of an "8") for use in displaying numeric only data.  The pricing on these less populated boards is approximately 25% lower.

These are the same matrix boards that were offered by Staver Signalex and CTS.  Contact ScoreTronics for pricing on these products.
